Geology Trail

The geology trail follows a way marked route from Green Gate car park through Forge Valley Woods.

Forge Valley Woods are part of Raincliffe Woods and cover the steep slopes that form the eastern valley side of Forge Valley with the River Derwent running below.

Now a nature reserve, Forge Valley  was formed when glaciers blocked the River Derwent's original route to the North Sea. As a result water cut it’s way through the rock  and in the process formed Forge Valley and sent the waters of the Derwent on a long and meandering journey to the North Sea.
